Genuine Urushinuri leather Tsuba
Hon-Urushi-Nuri (real Urushi lacquered) Zoto-Kawa-Tsuba (commemorative leather Tsuba).
Comes with a beautiful box, perfect for a gratitude or appreciation gift. These kind of Tsubas are usually gave as congratulatory presents in Japan, especially after aproving a Dan examination or winning a Kendo tournament. Eventually, these can be used in practice as well, but because they tend to be more expensive and are received as a gift, many people just keep them to be displayed at their house, office or Dojo.
Tsubas in this category are made with authentic Urushi; a natural lacquer that is coated in layers to give a smooth and durable covering. What makes them so valuable (and expensive) is the layers of Urushi must be carefully applied at exact time intervals with time to cure, which could take weeks or months. There are few artisans that possess the traditional necessary techniques, and Urushi itself is a valuable resource. After extracting it, the trees must be cut down so that new trees can be grown, making Urushi lacquer expensive and scarce. Urushi sap, in its raw liquid form, frequently causes severe rashes and must be handled with caution, making it a substance that few manufacturers are familiar with.
* It can be purchased without any engraving. In fact, outside Japan is often bought as a luxury trainning Tsuba (instead of a gift for somebody else).
* The paint-engraving option for commemorative items in Japan normally consists in putting a Yonmojijukugo (4 character compound word), or the date and in some cases the name of the achievement. For example: 祝昇段記念 which reads "commemoration for (Dan) promotion".
* It can only be paint-engraved at the opposite side of the Tsuba; the side that only has black Urushi.
